Khe Sanh Combat Base – DMZ Tour from Hue

Khe Sanh combat base is one of many stops in the DMZ tour besides Vinh Moc tunnels, Hien Luong bridge,… The battle of Khe Sanh is considered as the 2nd Dien Bien Phu because of its large scale about the importance and army force participating as well.

Where is Khe Sanh Combat Base located?

From Dong Ha city, the capital city of Quang tri province. It’s about 63 km toward the East. Khe Sanh combat base is also really close to Laos border, about 20 km.

Khe Sanh Combat base is often our 2nd stop in the DMZ tour after Quang tri ancient citadel. The tour start in Hue and from Quang Tri to Khe Sanh, it takes about 90 minutes to come by car.

The museum

 

Firstly, museum, which contains a plethora of historical remnants or objects, is the first one you should discover. There is a big map showing DMZ (demilitarized zone) on the 17 parallel. Guide will explain how the McNamara line worked to stop the infiltration of NVA from the North to the South. Many camps were set up and electronic sensors in the shape of tropical plant for detecting the movement of NVA are dropped down to the ground from Cua Viet beach to Laos border.

In the museum, you will see many pictures describing how Ho Chi Minh trail worked. Besides that, weapons such as artilleries, rockets,… were collected after the war and now they are exhibiting in the museum.

Behind the museum is the base and Ta Con airport. You can see a lot of cargo airplanes the Americans used in the war such as Chinook, C-130. These airplane played an important role in transporting and supporting troops, ammunition, weapon to strengthen the base. Besides that, bunkers, tanks, commander houses, trenches are still there for you to take photos.

You know the reason why the American did not want to lose this place in the past?

Because of its important location. The base was located near the border of Laos, and from the base, the Americans could easily control the Ho Chi Minh trail began from Quang Binh province to Laos and back to the South. The base was built from 1966, 2 years before a fierce combat happened there.

Khe Sanh combat base was also considered as a protection for Lang Vei camp, the very important camp where U.S Army focus to build on.
