Vinh Moc Tunnels – DMZ Tour from Hue

Vinh Moc tunnels is the underground system built from 1965 to 1966. Its purpose is sheltering local people of Son Trung and Son Ha commune in Vinh Linh commute, Quang Tri Province. Vinh Moc tunnels is one of the favourite destination of tourists during the DMZ tour.

Where is Vinh Moc tunnels?

How were the tunnels built?

It was built within two years just by simple tools without machine. It was estimated about more than 18.000 labour hours of working by local people.

The story about the person who designed the tunnels will surprise you. You may think of an expert who has the ability to built this complex system. However, a man who even had not graduated primary school was the one designed and led all people to built the strong shelter for all villagers.

Vinh Moc tunnels’ structure

Vinh Moc tunnels has 3 levels for different purposes of using.

The first level is about 12 meters under the ground. The level is for residents to live and has many room for families. In the past, this tunnel used to shelter about 60 families.

The second level is about 15 meters beneath the ground. There is the living place of NVA, and in some case for local people to avoid the bomb crater because of its depth.

Finally, the third level is up to 23 meters under the ground. There are rooms for weapon storage and meeting.

Vinh Moc tunnels have 13 entrances, 6 to the tops of hills and 7 to the South China sea. You can see the map below.

What are inside the Tunnels?

There are many rooms for people to live in the past. Besides that, to be able get enough oxygen when living in the deep tunnels. Local people needed to build a ventilation system for the air could flow through the tunnels. The ventilation wells are responsible for that purposes.

Not only the rooms for normal living, there are also many different rooms such as operation rooms, maternity room. There was 17 babies born in the time living in the tunnels.

Toilet, bathroom for daily activities were rudimentary. Other important rooms such as meeting room, drilling bomb shelter room or weapon storage room played an important role in the war.
